Tips for Association Boards

 

¥ Educate owners about the issue, the danger of secondhand smoke, fire dangers, ventilation issues, etc.

 

¥ Conduct a survey to assess the interest and support for no-smoking rules.

 

¥ Contact other associations that have implemented no-smoking policies.

 

¥ Propose no-smoking rules and request a vote of the Board or owners (as required) and add them to the governing documents. Clearly spell out the rules for owners and renters including the consequences for violations.

 

¥  File any changes with the appropriate governing body.

 

¥ An attorney should probably should be consulted.

 

¥ Communicate the new policy as widely as possible.

 

¥ Provide smoking cessation resources.
